Tangier, officially known as Tanja in Arabic, is a major port city located in northern Morocco at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. It spans an area of approximately 124 square kilometres and has a population of over 1 million residents. Tangier serves as a critical cultural and economic gateway between Africa and Europe due to its strategic location just across from Spain. The city is bordered to the north by the Mediterranean Sea and surrounded by the Rif Mountains to the south and east. Historically influenced by Phoenician, Roman, Arab, and European civilizations, Tangier is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, whitewashed medina, bustling souks, and vibrant arts scene. It is also home to the Port of Tangier Med, one of the largest and most important ports in Africa, playing a key role in international trade and maritime traffic.
